Nautical Know-How & Weather
Chicago Marine Weather (Open Water and Near Shore)
The National Weather Service (NWS), a part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), provides marine warnings and forecasts to serve all mariners who use the waters for livelihood or recreation.
National Data Buoy Center (south Lake Michigan)
map of Lake Michigan weather buoys, giving up-to-the-hour wind, weather, and wave data, and hourly reports of last 24 hours. Now you can watch the "perfect storm" in real time on the buoys! Fantastic site.
Great Lakes Forecasting System
Lake Michigan Surface Water Temperature presented with a nice graphic map of the Lake.
Great Lakes Sea Kayak
Find some favorite destinations in the area and check out equipment for sale. Offers a calendar complete with trips and events.
Nautical Know How - Running Lights: If you've been on the water at night, you already know how different things look. Test your recognition of running lights at night with this very cool simulation.

Commercial Outfitters
www.paddling.net
Paddling.net is a resource for information on Canoes and Kayaks. Search new canoes and kayaks with the Interactive Buyers' Guide or read what other members of the Paddling.net community have to say in the Product Reviews section.
Rutabaga Paddlesports Shop
This Madison, Wisconsin shop hosts the annual Canoecopia - the "world's largest paddlesport exposition.  Rutabaga is also a center for Sea Kayaking instruction (BCU, I believe).
Northwest River Supplies (NRS)
Great selection of all sorts of paddling gear.  Wetsuits, paddles, paddling jackets, and accessories.  NRS is geared more for whitewater paddling, but the sea kayaker can find lots of stuff here too.
West Marine
Local boating retail store, located on North Ave., close to the LPBC Boathouse.  Carries mostly yachting equipment, but also has lots of stuff useful to the kayaker (i.e., handheld marine radios).
Chicago Canoebase
Local shop sells canoe and kayak boats & supplies.

 

 

Events & Publications
Paddling in the Park
Paddling in the Park is a two-day canoeing and kayaking festival - a combination work shop, history lesson and trade show as the Chicago Tribune called it. ACA instructors teach two-hour lessons in solo and tandem canoe, river and sea kayaking
Canoecopia
Held held at the Dane County Exposition Center in Madison, Wisconsin, this expo offers workshops and lots of discounted paddling equipment.
Sea Kayaker Magazine

Chicago Area & Local Stuff
Chicago Area Paddling/Fishing Guide
Hundreds of places to Paddle, Fish, Sail, Row, or just relax in the Chicagoland Area.  Chicago Paddling/Fishing is not a commercial venture.  They are a non-commercial site dedicated to providing information.
Illinois Paddling Council
The Illinois Paddling Council (IPC) was organized in 1962 and is a not-for-profit association of paddlers and paddling organizations in Illinois. The Illinois Paddling council is dedicated to promoting the safe enjoyment of all phases of canoeing and kayaking in Illinois.
Racine Area Sea Kayakers Association
Provides an events calender for this Wisconsin paddlers club. Check out some current photos and submit an article for publication
Illinois Conservation Police
Not sure exactly what this one is (couldn't get beyond the first page), but it does have a nice picture of a police boat.
Michigan Kayaking
This site is intended to help you find places to kayak in Michigan and surrounding regions, with an emphasis on the Great Lakes. It also provides information on Michigan kayaking stores, rentals, books and links
CASKA
Chicago Area Sea Kayaking Association is an older organization, still active.  Offers a "paddlefinder" bulletin board to help you hook up with other kayakers (with boats) to paddle with.

Peninsula Paddlers Sea Kayaking Club
The Peninsula Paddlers Sea Kayaking Club is a loosely organized group, united by our interest in kayaking on the waters of Door County, Wisconsin. Door County has more miles of shoreline, state parks and lighthouses than any other county in the United States!
Prairie Coast Paddlers
The Prairie Coast Paddlers is a Sea Kayaking Club based in the Chicago area.  Their aim is to create a club that has numerous trips and to encourage safe and responsible kayaking.
Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Club (Michigan)
The Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Club is a loosely organized "network" of kayakers, united by their interest in kayaking on the Great Lakes, in the safe and responsible propagation of their sport, and the preservation of the Great Lakes' environment.
Peninsula Paddlers Sea Kayaking Club

This animated site has some very nice illustrations of many different kayak rolling techniques.
Paddle Float Roll by Nigel Foster
This site is from a Sea Kayaker article by the fabled British kayaker.  Nice illustrations. and lots of  good detailed written instruction.
Paddle Float Rescue by Nigel Foster
This site is from a Sea Kayaker article by the fabled British kayaker.  Similar to the above article, but with a focus on rescue.
Basic Knots (Sea Scouts)
This is a great site, with more basic knots.  It is from the Sea Scouts of Brighton, South Essex, UK.  This is the place to go for an animated look at tying the bowline, clove hitch, and other basic knots.

This article is by local Sea Kayaking instructor, Gary Simon.  He nicely delineates some differences between American Canoe Associates Kayak Instruction and British Canoe Associates kayak Instruction.

An online source of information for both beginner and advanced paddlers. Browsers can find up-to-date water level information, instruction schedules, local clubs, events and conservation news.  Many LPBC instructors are ACA certified.

The Norwegian Canoe Association organizes 73 local clubs from Alta in the north to Mandal in the south with 4000 members altogether. Norwegian Canoe Association (NCA) is the home of Norwegian Whitewater, Seakayaking, Racing and Dragon Boating.  Be sure to click the "English" button, or you may be somewhat confused.
Wooden Canoe Heritage Association
The Wooden Canoe Heritage Association, Ltd. (WCHA) is a non-profit membership association devoted to preserving, studying, building, restoring, and using wood, wood-canvas, cedar strip and birchbark canoes, and to disseminating information about canoeing heritage in North America.
American Whitewater Affiliation
The mission of the American Whitewater is to conserve and restore America's whitewater resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely.

British Canoe Union

Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Association
The Great Lakes Sea Kayaking Association is a Canadian non-profit organization, founded in 1989, whose aim is to promote and enhance the enjoyment of coastal kayaking in the Great Lakes area. Our members come from all over Ontario with a few from farther a field. They range in age from 18 to 80, and include everyone from novices to experienced expedition paddlers.
Irish Sea Kayaking Association
